Surprisingly, nearly all the roads I encountered in Ireland were paved. However, as can be seen in this shot of a road on the Dingle Peninsula, almost all Irish roads are extremely narrow and have nearly non-existent shoulders. It is not uncommon on some of the back country roads to have to pull to the side or back up to let an oncoming car pass.
