Colorado’s Mesa Verde National Park was established in 1906 to protect the large number of Anasazi indian cliff dwellings that are in the area.  The particular cliff dwelling pictured here, Cliff Palace, is the largest cliff dwelling in North America.

Dead Horse Point State Park offers a spectacular overlook of a gooseneck in the Colorado River. Although commonly mistaken for the Grand Canyon this park is actually in Utah near the north entrance to Canyonlands National Park. This area was used for the end scene to the movie “Thelma and Louise”.

Shiprock is a volcanic diatreme, the remnants from the throat of an ancient volcano. This formation is considered sacred to the Navajo people and climbing it is illegal. On a clear day this massive formation can be seen from well over 60 miles away.

Due to the fragile nature of this formation the Bureau of Land Management has limited visitors in this area to only 20 per day.
