Located on the Navajo reservation in New Mexico, Shiprock is an impressive formation that rises nearly 1,583 ft from the surrounding desert. Shiprock is a volcanic diatreme, the remnants from the throat of an ancient volcano. This formation is considered sacred to the Navajo people and climbing it is illegal. On a clear day this massive formation can be seen from well over 60 miles away.
